FER CONFERENCE 2025

This year 2025, we have been exhibitors at the 22nd National Congress of Recovery and Recycling held in Punta Umbria (Huelva), with the assistance of Valero Lopez and Maria Lopez.

Ion Olaeta, president of FER, sent a clear message in his speech: ‘Recycling is not an option, it is a strategic necessity for Europe’.

Very interesting was the round table that analysed how artificial intelligence is revolutionising our recycling market in the improvement of processes and the profitability of recycling plants. In addition, a second round table dealt with the topic ‘a more sustainable future’.

All in all, a very interesting congress and very topical issues of our time.

EXHIBITION 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF ZARAGOZA

Yesterday, 7 October 2024, the López Soriano 50th anniversary exhibition was inaugurated in the hall of the Zaragoza Chamber of Commerce. We had the presence of Jorge Azcón, President of the Government of Aragón, Natalia Chueca, Mayor of Zaragoza, and Enrique Moreno, Vice-president of FER (Spanish Federation of Recovery and Recycling).

The exhibition will be open to the public until the 15th of November during the opening hours of the Chamber, so that anyone who wants to visit can learn a little about our history and about recycling.

FAMILY DAY IN THE THEME PARK

Last Saturday 1st June, Industrias López Soriano celebrated its 50th anniversary with all the workers and their families at the Parque de Atracciones in Zaragoza. It was a very emotional day with a tribute to retirees and active workers with more than 25 years in the company.

Both the attractions of the Park and the table football, dartboard and winker championships that we did in the plot reserved for our company, made everyone enjoy the day. Even the children had several booths for different ages. And the climax was the giant paella that we all ate together.

We are very grateful to our workers for the nice detail of giving us a plaque with the inscription:

‘To the López Soriano family, for these 50 years that we commemorate today, with affection from their workers, friends and family’.

FAMILY DAY 50TH ANNIVERSARY LOPEZ SORIANO

Industrias López Soriano, a benchmark for female leadership in the industrial sector

Women account for 60% of the Aragonese business group’s management positions.

With 50 years of experience in the management and recycling of waste for sectors such as the automotive and domestic appliance industries, Industrias López Soriano has become a benchmark in Aragon for the circular economy, care for the environment and revaluation. A goal that the business group has achieved by responding to its customers with agility and quality, with modern facilities and state-of-the-art machinery, and through a firm commitment to equal opportunities in the business environment.

According to the manager of Industrias López Soriano, María López Palacín, equality has been incorporated into the company’s corporate policy and strategy in a very natural way. ‘We are a family business and the eldest in the third generation are women’, she says. Women now account for 60% of the company’s management positions, an example of female leadership in the industrial sector. In middle management, this percentage is around 25%, similar to other companies in the same sector.

To try to continue advancing along this path, Industrias López Soriano is developing an equality plan that tries to ‘put on paper what we are already doing’, as the manager says. The company has a young workforce and this has led them in recent years to apply conciliation and flexibility measures in order to adapt to new demands and new times.

Flexibility

These measures include adapting the timetable to a single morning shift from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in administrative positions or the possibility of teleworking, at certain times, in those positions that do not require physical presence. In addition, women and men have the ‘same salary and working conditions’, so that ‘the wage gap does not exist’, although ‘in terms of recruitment, equality is more difficult to achieve’, acknowledges the head of the business group.

Ours is a very male-dominated sector, specialising in heavy machinery, where the presence of women is rare, if not non-existent,” says López Palacín. In those positions where there may be equality, such as in the small electrical appliance processing plant, women represent 50% of the workforce, but in other cases the female demand for employment does not even exist“.

The manager refers mainly to the positions in the treatment plants where the hardest and most demanding jobs are carried out. ‘There are jobs where if you comply with the law on equality, you don’t comply with the law on prevention of occupational hazards, in the end you don’t know what criteria to apply’, she says.

The manager refers mainly to the jobs in the treatment plants where the hardest and most demanding work is carried out. ‘There are jobs where if you comply with the law on equality, you don’t comply with the law on prevention of occupational hazards, in the end you don’t know what criteria to apply’, she says.

Nor in these cases is flexibility of time and space applied, but rather the working day is organised in three shifts and is completely face-to-face because the production lines demand it. In this sense, the business leader calls for greater coordination between administrations when it comes to adapting public equality policies to the size of companies and to the different sectors.

“Benchmarks of success”.

From a general point of view, for the manager of Industrias López Soriano, work-life balance concerns both women and men and should be common to all sectors, ‘not only in industry, but also in leisure, commerce and catering’, and although she considers that ‘progress is being made and awareness is growing’, she sees the need to continue working to ‘reduce these gaps’.

In this sense, Industrias López Soriano collaborates through other institutions and organisations in actions that favour equal opportunities, especially in access to management positions for women in order to put an end to glass ceilings. As president of the Aragonese Association of Women Entrepreneurs (ARAME), López Palacín points out that ‘there is still a lot to do: inform, educate and give visibility to the fact that it is possible’.

According to the manager, ‘women have a tendency to undervalue themselves or to think that it is impossible to get there’, which is why it is important to have ‘successful role models’. Examples of female leadership that can be useful to other professionals, entrepreneurs and managers, and also to the new generations in fields such as university studies or vocational training.

She replaces Mª Jesús Lorente at the head of the association of women managers.

The Aragonese Association of Women Entrepreneurs (Arame) held an electoral general assembly yesterday in which María López Palacín was elected president of the organisation for the next four years. The manager of the López Soriano Group headed the only candidacy presented.

The new board of directors is made up of Myriam Monterde Maldonado, director of Arte por cuatro, with the position of first vice-president of Arame, together with Ana Cristina Esteban Baranda, manager of Alcanalytics, second vice-president. Miriam Almazán Monge, managing partner of Afiris; Nathalia Antas Martínez, CEO of Zaragoza Servicios; Ana Belén Arcos Uribe, of Posada Abadía de Siétamo; Irene Carmen Lequerica, executive director of DICSA; Cristina Gallart Saura, president of Fribin; Nieves García Casarejos, director of the Guidance and Employment Service and of the Expert Degree in Social Responsibility Management at the University of Zaragoza; Charo Guillén Mateo, creator of Mercabarrio; Beatriz López Sanz, director of Ibermac; Ana López Trenco, manager of Asapme; and Olga Pinilla Barcelona, director of Arteymerchan.

López Palacín takes over from María Jesús Lorente Ozcáriz who has been at the head of the association since 2008 and who last March was elected president of the employers’ association Cepyme Zaragoza.

‘I want to thank you for the work done so far and to keep everything that has worked well in Arame, as well as the 12 women who said yes when I invited them to be on the new board,’ said the new Arame president. ‘We believe that the diversity of the new board is the perfect mirror of the members,’ she added.

López assured that she and her team will try to give visibility not only to the association, but also to the members, ‘trying to find solutions to the common problems we have, without closing the doors to any of the other organisations in our region’. All of this, she continued, ‘occupying our place, looking for points of union and alternatives to the daily problems we have, in the case of Arame, mainly associated with our gender’. ‘We have come a long way but there is still a long way to go’, he concluded.

López Palacín is also Honorary Consul of Germany in Aragón. In recent years she has held positions in various institutions and organisations. She has been vice-president of the Zaragoza Chamber of Commerce, member of the Executive Committee of the Zaragoza Trade Fair and of the German Chamber of Commerce for Spain and patron of the different entities that make up the San Valero Group.

THE LINK THAT MAKES THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY POSSIBLE

La entidad ofrece a las empresas un servicio integral en la gestión de sus residuos.

With seven decades of experience in industrial activities related to the environmental sector, Industrias López Soriano (ILSSA) is a leading company and a true benchmark both regionally and nationally.

As the parent company of López Soriano, ILSSA has diversified its operations through the creation of several companies in numerous areas, ranging from general household appliance recycling, its main focus, to the automotive industry, the processing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and the real estate sector. “By managing them separately, we obtain materials that can be directly returned to production processes, thus avoiding the use of landfills,” explains María López, manager of López Soriano, regarding the key role they play in promoting the circular economy.

“It’s essential that both recyclers, with the material we obtain, and production processes, with the introduction of these, are currently moving in the same direction, making both compatible. Otherwise, obtaining a product that no one can use would not be a circular economy; it would be separating it and sending it to the landfill once again,” adds the entity’s head.

Combating Climate Change

This is also a very important task in combating the effects of harmful phenomena such as climate change. “Every time a production process uses second-generation materials, that is, recycled materials, as raw materials, CO2 emissions are significantly reduced,” notes López.

López Soriano uses the raw materials it recovers for any industrial use, especially refineries, foundries, steel mills—for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, especially aluminum and copper—and plastics, which are repurposed as parts of this component.

The organization also stands out for providing companies with comprehensive waste management, so they have a single point of contact to resolve important issues such as their questions about waste or their collection and paperwork needs.

It recently launched its new logo and corporate image. “We wanted to convey a message of trust and modernity. Although we’ve been here for a long time, the third generation of the family is now fully at the helm of the company, and the time had come for a change, while maintaining the values of service and commitment that we’ve always had,” says López.

Regarding its future challenges, ILSSA aims to “continue investing in innovation, always staying abreast of legal and labor updates and helping our clients adapt to them,” concludes the company manager.
